Aren't these perfect? Fifteen Rhode Island Reds have joined our flock this week!
The black Barred Plymouth Rock chicks we got a few weeks ago have grown so fast! I have to take some recent pictures to post, they look so different and have gotten so big.
The chicks are very low maintenance and the girls have really jumped into the responsibility of caring for them, so Andy took both girls on Monday to Rural King, to buy these Rhode Island Reds. They are also good layers and are a good cross with the Barred Plymouth Rocks. So, if we choose to someday raise more chicks, we'll be well set.

Could they be any cuter?

And really, no one should be surprised. Andy jumps headfirst into just about any project and we're both very interested in moving more toward self sufficiency in food production. Current census: 4 humans (set to change this month), 2 equines, 2 canines, 3 felines (since Biscuit came back last week after a couple of months away!) and 44 chickens!

If all of the chicks are hens and lay the average amount for their breed, in four - six months the girls will be collecting around 30 eggs per day!! We'll use what we need and sell the rest, using the money to buy feed and then deposit into the kids' savings accounts. They are pumped at this proposition!

And they don't seem to mind checking on the chicks and handling them regularly, either.
But even for future Easters, we'll be buying eggs to dye. After all, our eggs will all be brown. And you can't dye brown eggs!
