A great visit to the 'straight foot doctor!'

Today we had our first checkup in a year with Dr. Berrios, Abigail's pediatric orthopaedic surgeon. A few weeks before every appointment I start looking more closely at Abigail's left foot, stretching more often and am totally convinced that it's turning in too much. I talk to Andy about it and we always agree, there's nothing more we could do. So, we keep praying for strength for her foot and wisdom for her doctor. Mom has only missed two visits ever, the very first appointment at Riley, when Abigail was 3 months old, and last year's checkup. Today she was with us and it was a great day!

First of all, we had x-rays with no tears...a first! After a sunny (as always) greeting, Dr. Berrios asked Abigail to run up and down the hallway. He does this everytime but today was the first time she's ever done it by herself. Then he began discussing Abigail's situation. She is pigeon toed, knock kneed and her left foot (which was the club foot) is flat. I don't know about Mom but at this point I was preparing myself for bad news. No need to brace myself, she is just fine! Many pre-schoolers are knock kneed and pigeon toed and most of them outgrow it by the time they are 5. The flat foot may not go away and it is currently a size and a half smaller than her right foot but those are both things we can live with. The flat foot may need an orthotic insole at some point, but only if it bothers her.

Overall, we are so pleased and Dr. Berrios has said that we don't need to come back for another checkup for 2 years!! Wonderful news!! Thanks to all of you who have been praying for Abigail's foot from the very beginning, the hard work appears to be behind us.

Just to put it on the record, I won't be surprised if little Abner turns into a soccer and/or cross country star! That little foot could come in handy on corner kicks. I'm just saying!

Yea!!! The only thing that she'll miss out on is enlisting in the army & that's not such a bad thing. :) Way to go Abby (and her support staff)!!

Congratulations, Abby!! My toes liked each other, too...way more than my heels. You've got a long time to introduce them to the world. Keep on running!

I'm Kristi's friend from California. My father had the flatest feet his foot doctor had ever seen. He walked just fine for over 50 years with ortho supports. Now at 59 he finally has to undergo surgery to fix it. They still don't bother him, but are causing other problems. None the less, it took 59 years to be a surgery-type problem. Hope that helps, too! Isn't God GREAT!
